Flying two aircraft and with four COPA Flight 85 Pilots , 20 Teens ( with their Leaders and parents in attendance ) were hosted on Tuesday June 12 out of the New Collingwood Regional Airport Terminal. The day was Ideal VFR... and CAVU , VIZ Rules - Ceiling and Visability Un limited. Considerable co - ordination brought together members from the Third Collingwood Scout Troop under Patrol Leader Brenden McFarlane, All Saints Anglican WNG and their volunteer co-ordinator Laura Swanson and the Army Cadet's No 1909 with their Captain Karen Kristy. Pilot / Owner Patrick Doyle flying his 200 HP Commander C-FFOM ( constant speed prop - retractable gear flew half of the group. Among the " Wow " chatter from the new inductees were amazed comments about the Collingwood area topography... large Harbour - significant Lighthouse , the huge Blue Mountain - Interwest Village Complex. Patrick reported that all of his enthusiastic passengers went out of their way to be courteous and pro-fusley thankful for their enjoyable flight.
Our other three pilots, owners of the Collingwood Flying Club Cessna 177 Cardinal, C-FQEK shared flying duties, Pilot John Wood said some of the youngsters got a charge out of seeing the odd wild turkey -- out of runway 31 (our active )range ... gobbling on the airport fringe. He like Cptn. Bud McCannell - & Flight Leader George Daiels also reported the Kids enthusiasm to engage in intercockpit headset converstion. And of Course Wasaga Beach ..the longest fresh water beach in the world further impressed them when they were told that it was used as a landing strip in the 1930's for famous Aviators such as Amelia Earhart and Alcock and Brown among others. All very well behaved kids .. considering their excitement . The parents were very appreciative also. They understood this special " no - charge " volunteerism.
COPA flight 85 superimposed the famous poem HIGH FLIGHT on our Leaterhead. We gave each NEW YOUNG EAGLE a copy of this famous poem .... and their YOUNG EAGLES Certificate in an awards presentation at the conclusion of the event.
