Jim Nyhuus begins his safety seminar
On Saturday, May 10, 145 pilots attended
New learning was the main theme of the 3rd annual Safety Seminar organized by Flight 70. On Saturday, May 10, four dynamic speakers spoke to 145 pilots from across southern Ontario in the Corporate Restoration Hangar at Oshawa (CYOO).
The first presenter Jim Nyhuus, Civil Aviation Safety Inspector from Transport Canada, gave an excellent talk on Effective Decision Making. Jim reviewed several examples of critical thinking which pilots should use, with just the right touch of humour in his delivery. His presentation set the tone for the day.
Our second presenter was Shane Hartwell, Unit Operations Specialist from the Oshawa
Control Tower. Shane discussed the Proper Radio Procedures in the Control Zone. He also distributed a terrific booklet he designed specifically for this seminar. All pilots in attendance learned a great deal from Shane’s presentation and his booklet will be well used.
Just before lunch, Kevin Psutka, president and CEO of COPA National, shared his extensive knowledge of the World’s First Satellite Messenger - SPOT. Kevin did a super job of explaining how Spot works and its many features. Our president’s power point presentation clearly demonstrated that this is a "must have" item for all pilots.
The Refuelling Station once again provided a lunch/dinner that received accolades from
everyone. This outstanding meal was served by Kathleen and COPA Flight 70 members. Many pilots ate outside in the beautiful weather. The Corporate Restoration Hangar provided the perfect ambiance for this event as planes took off and landed.
Our final speaker, Bill Davidson, a pilot with extensive hours on several airplanes and an aviation insurance expert, delivered an effective presentation on Single Engine Maintenance.
Bill shared several great tips that were appreciated by everyone. There were many requests for his slide presentation which he readily shared.
The session ended with COPA Flight 70's fantastic " Lucky Prize Draw." Thanks to the support of 15 different corporate sponsors, a total of 32 pilots went away with some absolutely outstanding prizes worth more than $6,000!
In summary, the theme of the day was new learning. All four speakers helped to achieve this important goal.
Those pilots who attended went away with the two year Recurrent Training Certificate and some very important new facts to expand their knowledge of flying.
