COPA for Kids day a big success

On Saturday September 19, members of the Westview Flying Club/COPA Flight 98 provided flights for 22 young would-be pilots.

It had been a couple of years since our last Young Eagles Fly Day and there were lots of happy co-pilots after the event. Pilots Russell Storry, Bob Barfield, Tyrone Butler and Selina Smith volunteered their time and aircraft for this COPA For Kids event. Sheena Fraser and Pat Lewis handled the registrations and ramp escort duties.

We advertised the event in the local media and through the schools. For the first time we asked people to pre-register and that made the organization on the day much easier, although we had several drop-ins that we managed to accommodate.

Pre-registering meant that we would have a list of people to contact should the weather force us to reschedule (always a worry in the past). However, this year the weather was great for flying, with the threatening towering cumulus and rain showers appearing only as we finished up the last flights.

We are hoping to hold another COPA for Kids Day in the spring and perhaps to be involved in the Texada Aerospace Camp in August 2010.
