Fly-in breakfast at Cobden feeds over 600 guests

By Randy Kemp

The annual COPA Flight 124 - Cobden fly-in/drive-in breakfast was held this year on Sunday, June 13, and again it turned out to be a great success.

Of course the weather has a lot to do with attendance at this type of event and in our case we couldn’t have asked for a nicer day. As always the members cooked a fresh home-style breakfast with all the fixings including homemade beans and, for those that like desert with breakfast, homemade pie.

To ensure those waiting in line didn’t get too disenchanted, a local Irish Band provided entertainment and kept the feet moving even when the line for breakfast wasn’t.

Those out there know that putting things like a fly-in together does not come easy and its success is truly indicative of the membership’s ability to come together. What would be a fly-in without some scrounging of tables, chairs and cooking grills, as well as cleaning the grounds, assigning duties and a mired of other tasks done well in advance and under the guidance of the Champlain Flying Club’s President, Larry Buchanan.

It’s amazing that guests arrived well before our start time of 7 a.m., and since we don’t turn anybody away, they kept coming well after 11 a.m. - our end time.

This year aside from the members having their aircraft shined up and out for view approximately 35 various aircraft flewin throughout the morning as well over 600 breakfasts were served…which is about our yearly average.

Profits from the event help with the clubs operating budget as well a sizeable donation is made to the local food bank at Christmas

Those who missed this year’s event may wish to note that next year it will be held on June10, 2011 and we can always make room for you.

As well, those that wish to come a day early to get a good place in the line may camp in designated field locations, under the wing, or at Logo’s Land next door.

A great day, good food, music, friends and fellow pilots with interesting stories. It just doesn’t get any better!
