Fundraising challenge shows promise

for the COPA Special Action Fund

In my December 2007 column I suggested a few ways COPA Flights could raise money for the Special Action Fund (SAF) and challenged our COPA Flights to do some fund raising at their winter events. I am pleased to report that at least three Flights have done so as of this writing.

On Jan. 19, I had the pleasure of attending the Lethbridge, Alberta COPA Flight 24 annual banquet. In past years they ran a silent auction at the banquet to raise money for their club activities. This year they put their thinking caps on and came up with a great way to raise money for the SAF.

First they solicited prizes from local businesses and aviation suppliers, as well as donating a significant prize purchased by the club. At dinner they had over $2,000 worth of prizes displayed on a table while they sold raffle tickets.

Following dinner they drew tickets for the prizes which included a Cardinal watch donated by a local jeweler, an ICOM A6 radio, a number of shirt/cap packages donated by Garmin, and many gift certificates to various restaurants and businesses in the area.

At the end of the evening I was presented with a cheque for the Special Action Fund in the amount of $1,080. All that from 43 generous people at the banquet and a dozen or more local businesses.

Thank you to the Lethbridge Sport Flyers, COPA Flight 24.

I would also like to thank the Lloydminster, Alberta COPA Flight 113 for a donation of $1,000 and the Brantford, Ontario COPA Flight 148 for a donation of $100.

The pilots in these clubs recognized the value of the work COPA does to keep them flying and the need to do even more. Well done guys and gals.

We have more than 115 active COPA Flights across Canada. If each Flight could raise $1,000 for the SAF in 2008, that would be $115,000. What a great start towards that second million.

So I challenge you to do some brainstorming at your next Flight meeting and come up with a way to raise over $1,000 for the SAF in 2008.

Each month we will publish the Flight donations received and let’s see which Flight raises the most in 2008.

If you send more than one donation we’ll accumulate them to arrive at your total for the year.

On another subject, in this issue of COPA Flight you will find the candidates that are running for positions on the Board of Directors in this year’s election. Please take the time to read about them and then go to our website to cast your vote. The deadline for voting is April 4.

Our election may not be as exciting as the one currently in progress south of the border, but our candidates are willing to volunteer lots of their time and energy to your organization to help keep us all flying, so please show your support by voting. Let them know they are appreciated.

Meanwhile, keep you prop spinning.
