Accepted medications for hypertension

Medication Interim revision of Table III - Classification of medications for the treatment of hypertension in pilots

ACE Inhibitors
Captopril, Enalapril, Fosinopril, Lisinopril, Quinalapril
· In combination with diuretics, hypovolemia may occur and review by the AMRB may be recommended.

Beta-blockers
Acebutolol, Atenolol, Metroprolol, Nadolol, Oxprenolol, Pindolol, Propranolol, Timolol
· Hydrophilic beta-blockers are preferred. Compounds with alpha blockers are not accepable.

Calcium
Channel Blockers, Diltiazem, Nifedipine (tablets only), Nicardipine, Verapamil
* When prescribed for hypertension only.

Diuretics
Aldosterone, Amiloride in combination with HCT, Chlorthalidone (less than 100 mg/d), Hydrochlorothiazide (HCT), Indapamide, Methylcothiazide, Triamteren

Other anti-hypertensive medications will be referred to the Aviation Medical Review Board for advice. Combinations of anti-hypertensive medications will be viewed with caution.
