Diamond Aircraft recently conducted the initial test flight of a 170 hp diesel engine in a DA40 Diamond Star. The engine is slated for use in UAV’s, but one shouldn’t be surprised if it becomes an option if it proves reliable.
Diamond has worked with Austro Engine GmbH to create the turbo diesel. Both companies have their headquarters in Wiener Neustadt, Austria.
Mercedes Benz Technology (MB-Tech) is also a partner in the engine's evolution according to Peter Maurer, president of Diamond Aircraft in London, Ontario. Diamond Aircraft CEO, Christian Dries, and Sören Pedersen, Managing Test Pilot at DAI carried out the initial flight and pointed out the engine provided high performance power output while providing diesel economy.
Dries noted the use of MB Tech developed combustion technology, in comparison to ‘normal’ engines reduces fuel consumption by 20 percent while maintaining performance.
If these engines become available in the DA42, one could expect increased gross weight allowances and cruising speeds near 200 knots at altitude.
