Each year Transport Canada organizes and hosts the Civil Aviation Safety Seminar. It is the foremost gathering of aviation safety people in Canada. This year the event was held May 14-16 in Ottawa.
In the spirit of bringing a more research-based focus to the conference, COPA invited Gerald Wilde, Ph.D., to speak at COPA’s presentation to CASS. Dr. Wilde is Professor Emeritus of Psychology at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ont., and is considered one of the world’s foremost authorities on safety psychology. Having spent a lifetime researching transportation safety and teaching at Queen’s, Dr. Wilde has retired to the lecture circuit to speak about safety. He is the author of Risk Homeostasis Theory and has published his work in the books Target Risk and Target Risk 2. Target Risk is very readable and is available complete online at http://pavlov.psyc.queensu.ca/target/. COPA is pleased to have been able to bring such an eminent researcher to CASS. Dr. Wilde’s presence at CASS was made possible by support from the COPA Flight Safety Foundation.
