COPA receives calls from members who have landed at small airports and then, months later, have received a bill in the mail. One member received an invoice from Rainbow Lake, B.C., that included $15 for landing fees and $50 to walk though the old terminal building to meet his ride to town.
These fees are usually not advertised in the Canada Flight Supplement (some are) or on signs at the airport. The only way to find out what you will pay in airport fees is to phone in advance and ask. Record the details of the call and get the person’s name. When you receive the bill make sure the fees are right or send the bill back, with reference to the phone call. Also, consider visiting the “Places to Fly” section of COPA’s Web site as part of your flight planning. Created by volunteer submissions from airports and members, many of the locations have fees listed. If you receive an airport services bill in error, return it with a note attached explaining that your aircraft did not fly there or use those services when it did. Contact Adam Hunt.
