Although COPA President Kevin Psutka was not able
to attend the City Hall meeting he responded in writing to a request for
submissions in preparation for a series of Toronto Council Committees meetings
in October. At the time of writing of this report, COPA Director Glenn Grenier
is scheduled to make a presentation on October 24, highlighting the written
submission, which points out how Toronto compares with other North American
cities in terms of reliever general aviation airports, and how it would be
distinctly at a loss, compared with other cities, if it were to abandon the
airport. A recently-completed City staff report recommends an “expand or close”
approach, concentrating on upgrading the passenger facilities rather than
lengthening the runways. Given Regco’s timely announcement of plans to start a
commuter airline, the lines are now clearly drawn for a good debate.
