Labrador RCOS transferred to the Halifax FIC

All radio calls using the Labrador Remote Communications Outlets (RCOs) at Nain, Hopedale, Goose Bay and Churchill Falls will now be answered by the Halifax Flight Information Centre.
For Goose Bay, the above service transition applies only to the standard RCO operating on the 126.7 MHz frequency. The Dial-Up RCO, operating on 122.5 MHz, was deemed redundant in a recent analysis and therefore were decommissioned effective 0901 UTC on August 8.
These transitions complete the Halifax FIC implementation phase, making Halifax the first Flight Information Centre in Canada to go fully operational.
Previously, RCO services for Newfoundland and Cape Breton were transferred on June 13, 2002 and Dec. 27, 2001, respectively. Toll-free telephone briefing services for the entire Atlantic Canada service area moved over to the Halifax FIC in two phases, on Dec. 27, 2001, and Feb. 4, 2002. The FIC began operations Sept. 17, 2001.
Beyond August 8, briefing services, including walk-in briefings, will no longer be provided at Flight Service Stations (FSS) within the Halifax FIC service area. These FSSs will focus on providing airport advisories, vehicle control and local weather observations.
The St. John’s FSS closed on August 8. At the same time, to continue meeting the needs of airport clients, the St. John’s Control Tower extended its hours of operation from 17.75 to 24 hours.
Flight information services are offered through the Halifax FIC. The 24 hours per day hourly METAR and SPECI weather observation reports as well as the 24-hour Aerodrome Forecast (TAF) will continue.
Pilot Information Kiosks have been installed in Fredericton, Saint John, Sydney, Deer Lake, St. Anthony, and St. John’s. These units provide customers with direct access to advanced weather information via the Aviation Weather Web site (AWWS), as well as a direct toll-free line to Halifax FIC Specialists for detailed interpretive briefings and flight planning services.
Future Halifax FIC updates will be communicated to you in advance through regular notices, as well as in Aeronautical Publications. General information on the FIC Project is available at our Web site at www.navcanada.ca under “Service Projects.”
