Toronto City Centre Airport saved

By Julia Henderson, The Helicopter Company

On Nov. 28, three- quarters of City Council supported a bridge - 29 in favour, 11 opposed.
There were a few conditions attached to the final recommendation, but nothing that will slow the progress of bridge construction which will begin by Spring of 2003, and by Spring 2004, a new air carrier will be operating from the TCCA.
For most of us it feels like a huge weight has been taken off our shoulders.
The way has been made clear to improve and enhance this wonderful small regional airport here at the Foot of Bathurst Street.
Over the next year or so we are told to expect the construction of the bridge and a new terminal.
We can expect the arrival of Regco’s regional air service.
We can expect growth and prosperity of the small businesses here on the island who have stuck it out and endured the uncertainty with their hands tied for so many years, as this debate has dragged on.
And, we can expect that General Aviation (individuals, associations and operators) who use, rely and interact with CYTZ will have a small airport in Toronto for years to come à the “Tripartite Agreement,” protects and binds the interest of ‘GA’ as an integral part of the airport’s function.
Generations to come will benefit from the foresight of such wonderful Friends (you!), community and leadership of all those who supported the airport. We wholly thank you for your efforts!
I need some rest right now, as I know most of you do after all the hard work put into this marathon debate. I will not leave you though.
The Friends of the City Centre Airport will go on. I will encourage you to write me and keep me informed as you always do.
I will hope you will keep telling your friends to join the Friends@TorontoCityAirport.com for my news and efforts.
I will try to get a regular publication together so we may all keep in touch. Until then, have a wonderful holiday season!
You are all good Friends of the City Centre Airport. Thank you from the Airport Campaign whole team!
Editor’s note: COPA submitted several documents in support of retaining the airport and director Glenn Grenier, appeared before a marathon session of City Council Committees to emphasize our position.
This session led to a City Council vote in favour of development at the airport.
